I don’t know about you all, but when I go to the gym, I notice many of the people there are in shape or somewhat in shape, which makes sense, but for those who want to get in shape, being overweight in this setting could potentially feel overwhelming, intimidating, de-motivating, and flat out uncomfortable.
When I see people who are out of shape and overweight at the gym, I admire them. They strike me as strong individuals who are doing what it takes to prioritize their health and reach their fitness goals.
1. They push through intimidation
The gym can be intimidating, especially for those who feel they lack expertise or strength, are out of shape, or have no experience in a gym setting.
2. They push through judgment
It can feel de-motivating to go to a public space, knowing there is an opportunity for others to judge your health status when you know you’re not where you want to be.
3. They realize physical results don’t show up immediately
It takes time to notice the results on your physique and overall health. You might feel different, but the physical transformation might take longer; this can be de-motivating, which is why many people give up.
4. They treat their body as a temple
One way to care for our bodies is to eat well and stay physically active. People who attend the gym after getting off track exhibit self-discipline and willpower. They show up and make it happen for themselves.
5. They practice self-care.
Just because you’re not where you physically want to be doesn’t mean you matter less, you’re less attractive, your body is less valuable, or you should let yourself go further and not invest in yourself anymore.
They show up for themselves and prioritize their self-care, which is a direct form of self-love that ultimately increases their self-value, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
6. They don’t mind appearing physically weak
Not everyone can blow iron, run several miles, or apply 100x intensity to their workouts, primarily when they haven’t worked out in a while or are not at their ideal fitness level.
However, they start where they are and keep showing up, accelerating their progress. The more they show up for themselves and at the gym, the better the results they witness.
7. They don’t quit on themselves
When you’re not used to prioritizing your health, switching up and integrating this new habit can feel challenging.
Once you reach a certain point, taking care of yourself is no longer possible. The task can seem too daunting.
Instead of giving up, they forge ahead.
8. They understand pain is good
One of my favorite quotes is, “Pain is good.” Why? Because pain causes growth and transformation. Pain is choosing a better path for yourself and your body.
In the beginning, pain can seem unbearable. Over time, you become acclimated and welcome it (or the pain ceases altogether).
9. It’s a journey, but they focus on the destination
Some suggest enjoying the journey, which is valid to an extent. But there are many times you won’t enjoy the journey. Sometimes, focusing on your long-term goal and vision will keep you going.
Pain, discomfort, and inconvenience are usually unenjoyable (at least initially). But becoming healthier and reaching your health and fitness goals is worth the pain and discomfort along the journey.
It’s not about short-term pleasure but the long-term goal. To reach a goal, one must prioritize and focus on one’s long-term vision.
10. They show up
I can’t stress enough how important it is to show up for yourself on your health journey. If you don’t show up for yourself, who else will? Your accountability partner can’t show up for you.
Showing up to the gym takes willpower, discipline, and focus; this is a big win.
