Simple but effective strategies
This advice will probably work for many hair types outside of type 4, but I can only speak to what has worked for my hair specifically.
1. Use fewer products.
I use three things on my hair: jojoba or hemp oil and water. That’s it. So far, the results are pretty magnificent. I used to leverage several “great” products, but they were suffocating my hair and not adding much value to it. Maybe the products smell nice, but my hair likes me a lot better with fewer products.
2. Manipulate your hair as little as possible.
My hair has been in three primary styles throughout my life:
Braids
Twists
Locs
These styles require low manipulation and are all protective styles, which helps shield my hair from the wear and tear that accrues from wearing my hair loosely.

3. Focus on natural products with fewer ingredients.
None of the products I utilize have added ingredients, which is epic because most of my past products have so many added ingredients I can’t pronounce and probably don’t need in my hair.
Your hair is like skin; whatever you put on it, it ingests — for better or worse. Know what you’re putting in your hair before putting it there. Don’t put stuff on your hair because it’s a well-known brand or smells good. Always look at the ingredients.
Wishing you well on your hair journey. xo.
