Navigating racial situations
She spoke up to a white man in leadership that used the term “low-hanging fruit” in the workplace, which has direct ties to lynching.
Maybe you’ve used the phrase before and didn’t realize this. Well, now you know.
Speaking up doesn’t always mean losing your job, going on administrative leave, or getting reprimanded. Sometimes (not always), the response is positive. The woman who spoke up to the white male leader still has her job.
That’s the thing about racial situations; they’re not always malicious. Often, racial or prejudicial situations are founded on ignorance. People simply need to be more educated.
When I talked to the CEO of my company about implementing Juneteenth as an official holiday, he graciously accepted the idea and executed it. He understood the points I presented that explained the importance of the holiday, which created more empathy. I didn’t receive any negative feedback or consequences.
