Doubt it
Thicker bodies.
Bigger asses.
Tanner skin.
Juicier lips.
But even with tanner skin, people never go to the dark chocolate level or “too dark” because being dark is still a problem and “less attractive” to some.
We can easily see this in the corporate world, leadership, the media, and how people treat a darker versus a lighter person.
Would the Kardashian have risen to such prominence if they were dark chocolate? Doubt it.
Though they’re not entirely white, they still pose a very Eurocentric appearance, which is easily digestible for most.
In the entertainment industry, lighter skin takes precedence over all other factors, and when darker skinned [people] are given opportunities, they’re superficial stereotypes (Source: Daily Trojan).
Viola Davis
A perfect example of this is Viola Davis; it took her decades to start landing roles that presented her in non-traditional roles for a darker woman of color.
How To Get Away With Murder: In this role, she was independent (and emotionally dependent), intelligent, sexy, complex, and successful.
The She King: In this role, she’s a king. Enough said.
Many lighter-skinned individuals have been able to land more diverse roles unnaturally and much earlier in their careers.
Zendaya
Could you imagine a dark chocolate-skinned female cast in Zendaya’s role in Spiderman?
We’re on our way by having a woman of color play Mary Jane, but we’re still not there.
Many female superheroes are still played by actresses who are still not that dark.
President Obama & Kamala Harris
The people we’ve had in the office are both lighter in complexion.
What does this reveal? You still can’t be too black.
The day a person with a dark complexion gets into office will be momentous for the world.
It will signify that we are going past the nonsensical colorism society has perpetuated for far too long.
What Are You Mixed With?
I always tell people I’m black. Yet, people still ask, “Are you all black?”
The answer is yes, but for some reason, if you’re lighter in complexion and look a little different, you can’t be all black.
Lighter Still Gets Better Treatment
The Kardashian children are brown, but they will always have obvious advantages in addition to being lighter in complexion.
People are still more easygoing towards people with lighter complexions than those with darker complexions.
A friend told me they were sad when their child was born because their skin was dark.
A beautiful man told me people don’t want to date him because he’s Nigerian, which I found hard to believe.
There have been clear cases of disparity in the treatment of light versus dark. This goes back to the house versus field enslaved people.
But if you do have a darker complexion, don’t allow this factor to impede your life.
