Treat your dreams like babies through consistent nurturing
There will be times when you question the point of working on your dream, goal, or desire. There will be times when you contemplate whether your efforts are entirely pointless and wasteful of your limited time. There will be times when you feel depressed, down, discouraged, and unmotivated to keep investing in your dream because you aren’t witnessing results. There will be times when the quality or quantity of effort you put into your dream is low. There will be times when you are burnt out.
But if you can’t get the dream out of your mind, you got to keep going and walk in your purpose; if this is not the case, then it’s probably time to re-evaluate your goal and brainstorm how you can re-align to ensure you’re investing your time, effort, and energy into the right objectives. Our actions always let us know how bad we truly desire something.
All of these times of ups and downs are normal and expected; they’re all a part of the process.
What Is The Process?
Elite athletes in collegiate and professional sports increasingly follow a philosophy known as “The Process.” It’s a philosophy created by University of Alabama coach Nick Saban, who taught his players to ignore the big picture – important games, winning championships, the opponent’s enormous lead – and focus instead on doing minor things well – practicing with full effort and finishing a specific play, converting on a single possession.
A season lasts months, a game lasts hours, catching up might be four touchdowns away, but a single play is only a few seconds. And games and seasons are constituted by seconds.
If teams follow The Process, they tend to win. They overcome obstacles and eventually make their way to the top without ever directly focusing on the obstacles.
If you follow The Process in your life – assembling the right actions in the right order, one right after another – you too will do well. Not only that, you will be better equipped to make quick work of the obstacles along that path. You’ll be too busy putting one foot in front of the next to even notice the obstacles were there.
– Nick Saban
Dreams Are Like Babies
A dream takes hard work – as we all know. An intelligent way to view your dreams is to compare them to babies. If you think about it, dreams are just like babies:
Babies must be fed, nurtured, cared for, and given consistent attention; babies cannot take care of themselves. Dreams cannot take care of themselves either; you must take care of your dreams by nurturing them, giving them attention, and feeding them.
Consistent Tiny Action Will Get You To The Finish Line
As you continue nurturing your goals, keep in mind that it’s the consistency of your actions that will lead you closer to the finish line.
Achieving your goals won’t always be fun and games, and if it were, we would not cherish and appreciate the result as much as we do when we arrive.
Enjoy the journey – even when it doesn’t feel or look beautiful. There will be many times of emotional turmoil and pain from discipline. Know that as long as you stay consistent – with marginal improvement- you’ll reach your destination sooner than later.
