It’s not typical; it’s outlier-ish
However, there were also few people from my past that were able to witness my generosity – though small in magnitude, the giving was genuine and a clue for what was to come.
Giving Was Always The Preference
I always wanted to be the giver over the receiver. I knew at some point the roles would switch. To this day, I still remember a conversation held with a mentor:
At the time, guilt overwhelmed me because I received so much support raising funds to study abroad. I couldn’t pay any of the people back for their generosity. My mentor told me, don’t worry about it. The roles will reverse when the time comes; you will be the giver, and others will be the receiver.
It was a struggle to accept her words, but her words came true not too long after.
Poor [People] Are More Charitable Than The Wealthy. – NPR
Most people say that as you gain more resources, you give less. Oddly enough, it’s true. As humans accumulate, we have a nasty habit of hoarding our goods – usually out of fear, entitlement, and a lack of compassion.
One Motivation To Increase My Income
You don’t have to raise your income to give more. You can decrease your expenses and live a simpler life. But money and resources can help many people in ways non-monetary giving can’t.
One of my motivations for increasing my income is to be in a position to help and give to people more.
Finally, I realize that giving both monetary and non-monetary provides healing forces to the giver. Recently, I experienced a detrimental loss, and a celebration for me was still taking place. I was too despondent to celebrate myself, though, and to be frank, I didn’t want to or feel like it. So, I took it upon myself to send thoughtful gifts around the country to people I loved and cared about. I knew that being celebrated and receiving wouldn’t make me feel happy, peaceful, or whole. What I needed was a day of giving; that’s what brought healing to my heart. That’s what made me smile.
Giving is a saving grace.
