Sometimes individuals need to save themselves first
Sometimes couples therapy can, but sometimes it can’t. There are cases when two people have too much work to do on their individual selves that couples counseling can’t save them.
There are also cases when one partner lags so far behind in personal development and emotional maturity that couples counseling doesn’t make sense until they perform significant individual work.
If you love someone and you love yourself, you will take time away from a toxic relationship to ensure you are not endangering your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. You will also give the other person space to grow for themselves and the relationship (if they desire to continue it).
