Where are your desires leading you?
Year after year, I kept putting off Scotland for no apparent reason outside of the fact that the timing never felt right. Then I finally went, and I laughed because when I got to Scotland, I didn’t do anything except see my favorite pianist and rest.
Sometimes we are so obsessed with getting somewhere or getting something. Then, when we finally have access, we change our minds for a multitude of reasons. One being, sometimes we actually don’t want it that much.
Attainment can be a disease. We can end up focusing endlessly on attaining this precious thing (#Smeagol), and then it ends up destroying us or completely diverting us from where we genuinely need to be.
My desire to see the Harry Potter castle didn’t destroy me, but I found it humorous how my desire self-destructed once I was standing right in the face of the opportunity.
So, what are you trying to attain? What are your goals? What are your desires? When was the last time you questioned why you want what you want?
Pursuit without question is self-destructive. It’s like going endlessly for miles to a specific exit, without stopping to pause, rest, and recalibrate. You never stop to think is this still right?
Getting the job you always wanted, getting the car you always dreamt of, getting the partner who checks off almost or every box, getting the house you’ve been dreaming of, traveling the world, finally reaching entrepreneur status and owning your own business, getting that degree, or whatever it is that you want – well what then?
Desires require a foundation if they are to thrive. If you have a desire just to have a desire, it will often leave you feeling empty.
Why did I want to go to the Harry Potter Castle so badly? I have no clue. I realize I’m okay if I never see it. So I wonder why I had the desire in the first place.
Why do you want what you want?
What if your dream or desire never happened?
How would it make you feel?
I have this feeling that our most important desires are the ones that make us lose sleep, the ones that we can’t carve out of our minds, the ones that we feel born to achieve.
What were you born to achieve and accomplish?
What unfulfilled desire would make leaving Earth uncomfortable?
That’s what you need to focus on doing.
For me, it wasn’t getting to the Harry Potter Castle. It was more so about the portal Scotland, it opened for my personal growth after going there, because after Scotland, I wasn’t the same.
Sometimes dreams are just masks for something else we need to achieve or discover within ourselves.
What might your dreams and goals be leading you to?
Explore, question, find out, and ponder.
And just remember, sometimes we don’t always know what we want until we are in reach of what we have always wanted.
