One of the hotel rooms I recently stayed in had all my favorite candy lined up and ready to go for me.
However, when I was younger, I used to sleep with my favorite snacks and candy under my bed without indulging, so it’s easy for me not to indulge in tasty treats.
I understand this is not the case for many people, though. If something is within sight, people frequently partake.
In Atomic Habits, James Clear recommends avoiding having your temptations within sight; this helps you steer clear of giving in to your unproductive desires – such as the hotel mini bar.
But there will be times when we cannot avoid temptation; the only thing we can do is not give in.
Willpower and self-discipline are critical traits to have to master impulse control. The more you can master impulse control, the more long-term rewards you will experience.
Impulse control carries over into every area of your life.
