I’ve had acne since I was thirteen.
Thirteen.
I tried everything. And eventually something worked — retinoids genuinely changed my skin, and these days I get complimented on it. But here’s what the “perfect skin” posts never tell you: even with good skin, I still broke out. Retinoids got me most of the way there. Not all of it.
And travel made it worse. Every trip, like clockwork, the breakouts ramped up.
So I did the thing most skincare routines skip entirely. I stopped only fixing my face, and fixed my gut.
The Thing That Actually Changed Everything
In early 2026, I started Seed — a prebiotic and probiotic.

I’m not going to throw medical claims at you. I’ll just tell you what happened: since I started it, my breakouts went from “constant background noise” to barely there. I can travel now — the exact thing that used to wreck my skin — without breaking out.
That was the missing piece. Not another serum. My gut.
If you’ve tried every topical under the sun and your skin still won’t settle, this is the angle nobody talks about.
My Face Routine Is Almost Embarrassingly Simple
People assume clear skin means a ten-step shelf, or perfect diet. Mine is four things.
Cleanser: CeraVe Salicylic Acid. One note — I buy my CeraVe abroad. The European formulas are slightly different and, in my experience, better, so every time I travel I stock up and bring a haul home. (You can absolutely use the US version linked here; I’m just particular.)
The drying step — which isn’t drying at all. I never touch my face with a towel. Ever. The second I’m done washing, while my skin is still damp, I go straight in with moisturizer.
Moisturizer: CeraVe lotion — not the cream. I used to use the cream; turned out I didn’t need it. I layer the lotion on, two to three coats, and let it air dry completely. No towel, no rubbing. Damp skin drinks it in.
Sunscreen: EltaMD tinted sunscreen, every single day. Sun, clouds, rain, winter — doesn’t matter. Every day.
That’s the whole face routine. Cleanser, lotion, sunscreen. Done.
Retinoids: At night, I add retinoids.
My Secret Weapon for a Surprise Breakout
Every now and then one still slips through. When it does — in the daytime — I reach for the same thing I put in my hair: rosemary oil.
A few drops on a Q-tip, dabbed straight on the spot. It works surprisingly well on my skin.
One caution: essential oils are strong, and facial skin is more sensitive than your scalp. It’s often recommended to dilute it, and whether you need to depends entirely on your skin. Start diluted and see how you react.
For My Body
My body routine is about evening out tone and healing old marks more than anything.
I keep a little amber bottle going with three oils infused together: bakuchiol — the gentler cousin of retinol — rosehip oil for tone and scars, and black seed oil in there too. Bakuchiol is potent on its own, so the rosehip and black seed are the perfect carriers to cut it. One bottle, three oils.
Then azelaic acid for evenness and dark marks, and Centella to calm and heal.
And in the shower, one thing: African black soap. That’s it. I don’t use anything else.
Don’t Forget Your Feet
Quick one, because nobody talks about feet until they’re cracked.
After a shower, I slather my feet in Aquaphor or Vaseline, then put on socks. (My mom does the same with olive oil and socks — same idea.) Do that a few nights and cracked heels disappear.
If you sleep barefoot, that’s your call — and your heels will let you know about it.

Wrapping It Up
Acne since 13, and what finally cracked it wasn’t a fancier serum. It was one thing: dealing with my gut.
The rest of the stuff is a bonus.
Better skin, for me, came from consistency and the right few things — not a bathroom full of products.
Wash. Layer the lotion onto damp skin. Sunscreen, always. Handle what’s happening on the inside. Repeat.
Everything I use is linked above — all of it real, all of it on heavy rotation.
