What experiences have you had?
Though I wouldn’t label the people who surround me as racist, ill-intentioned, or harmful, there have been some sketchy events that have occurred.
I know many other Black individuals have experienced far worse questions, but here are a few of mine through the years:
1. Can You Twerk?
A white guy asked me, “Can you twerk?
2. Straightened Hair
“When are you straightening your hair again?”
3. Interracial Dating
“Oh, you date people outside of your race?”
4. Transform Your Genetics
A white guy asked me, “Can you make my hair look like a bi-racial women’s hair?”
5. That Can’t Be All Your Hair
“Is that your real natural hair [it is often assumed that Black women can’t grow long hair]?”
6. Where Do You Hold Fat?
“And if you don’t have any now, you will definitely get it all in your thighs later.”
7. Are You Really Black?
“You don’t seem to be all black.”
