Increase your productivity while indulging in temptation
He was also employing temptation bundling to make his exercise habit more attractive. Temptation bundling works by linking an action you want to do with an action you need to do. In Byrne’s case, he bundled watching Netflix (the thing he wanted to do) with riding his stationary bike (the thing he needed to do).
Atomic Habits – James Clear
A common belief is that we must separate pleasure and work; enjoying both at the same time can seem impossible. However, we can tap into our creative juices and find a way to do both.
We don’t have to spend all of our time on work, goals, and obligations. The key is balancing the two, so you can experience the best of both worlds.
If you rather take a walk than get some writing done, get a treadmill that faces the window, set up your laptop, and write + walk simultaneously. Or use voice dictation to write while you walk outside. There is usually a way to engage in the activities we want to do while remaining productive.
In the case you can’t do what you want to do and what you have/need to do, then accomplish what you need to do first and then reward yourself with doing what you want to do after you’ve completed the necessary task.
If you’re going to watch tv while you write, there are several ways to successfully do this:
Turn the TV on mute.
Write on commercial breaks.
Watch a movie or show you’ve already watched and use it as background.
Watch one episode, then take a break and write for the same amount of time as the episode. Then watch another episode and repeat the process.
Pick a show or movie you can write about. Sometimes, I will watch a show, movie, or documentary and actively watch it so that I can write an article about it. Media is the perfect place to acquire new writing material.
