Always treat separations with grace
Documentation
Since my partner and I were not married, it helps to have contracts or proof of ownership of who invested what. I’ve created a trail showing dual ownership through the account’s personal information. I’ve also handled most of the transactions for the account.
If you’re not in a marriage relationship, it helps to draft up a contract and have witnesses or get lawyers involved if you feel it truly necessary; it’s for protection. Unfortunately, most people’s emotions get the best of them more often than not. Most people revert to their inner child regarding ending love relationships. It’s not personal; it’s life.
Document as much as possible, and keep track of any money coming from your account. Ensure both people can maintain access to the accounts at all times. Finally, ensure you maintain communication. It doesn’t need to be all the time, but you should have semi-regular check-ins not only to ensure the well-being of your shared investment.
Go Into Relationships Financially Aware
When you first enter a relationship, the first thought isn’t, “we’re not going to work out.” Often, you feel “forever vibes,” but once you’re in a relationship for a while, you start to learn if that forever vibe is a real one or a fluke.
Throughout all of my relationships, I always make sure of one thing, that I take care of myself financially. Here’s what that looks like:
Pretend as if I have to support myself, so I will never rely on someone else to support me financially.
Don’t share a majority of my finances if I feel the other person isn’t financially sound.
Be able to support me and all of my living expenses.
Maintain a stocked emergency fund.
Live below my means.
Consistently invest.
Avoid debt.
