Protect the locs from falling off!
Also, when you color a loc, you risk making the loc fall out – especially if you previously colored your hair. It can snap the loc where the color meets the other part of the shaft that was colored, whether you’re careful enough or not.
It is an excellent recommendation to color your hair after you’ve experienced significant growth so that you do not have to concern yourself with the already colored hair.
Since my hair already has color, my stylist uses color with zero developers.
It is up to me whether or not I use color with the developer on my hair, but I’m not taking the risk. It’s just not worth it to me – especially since my hair is still loose and new to the locking process.
Instead of damaging my hair, the color my stylist uses conditions my hair and provides a lovely tint. I will get the name of the color she utilizes and write about it in a future post; I know it’s a European product, which is also interesting.
I know some people who colored their locs after it was locked, and half of the locs fell off. It’s OK if this happens and you have a long loc, but if you just locked your hair and it wasn’t that long in the first place, you risk losing a whollllllllle loc.
Most people who lock their hair don’t start with super long hair, so having only a third or fourth of a loc snap-off is not too common.
It’s easy to hide a missing loc if it’s in the middle or back of your head, but not if it’s in the front! But hey, if this happened or happens to you…you’re still gucci.
Before I use developer on my hair again, my hair will have to be significantly grown out in loc form, which will take some time.
In the meantime, I can use safe tinting colors that don’t damage my hair or locs.
Key Message: Before the locking process, color your hair. Be sure your hair isn’t damaged from the coloring process so you can experience healthy and strong locs.
Ways To Improve Locked Hair & Growth
Conditioning the hair might conflict with popular advice, but my hair requires moisture, so I still condition my hair.
Eat clean and nutrient-dense foods. The healthier you eat, the more you increase the likelihood of hair growth. If you desire longer locs, eat clean, healthy foods with high nutrient content.
Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Never underestimate the power of hydration. Hydration keeps everything concerning the body in order.
For hair growth, try Modere. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, eat tons of raw veggies (it works).
