It can be challenging to be nice to others in a world where most of us are trying to get through the day unscathed. And it takes extra effort for you to be benevolent, thoughtful, loving, patient, and respectful to people you encounter often. But when you are a kind human to other humans, the world (e.g., people, places, things, animals, opportunities) tends to be kinder to you.
Be nice to others, not for the sake of receiving anything back. Be nice to others for your sake. Be nice to others to live a higher life. Be nice to others to be a light. Be nice to others to spread love in this world. Moreover, be even kinder to those who do not have it within themselves to be kind to you; these interactions often leave a lasting impact on both you and the other person.
If everyone can be more kind to the world, the world and everything in it will be a kinder place for everyone to live out their days. It takes effort to be a nice human being, but so does being a rude human being; which one do you want to invest more effort, time, and energy into?
