They tell us what we should work hard at
What Are Your Genes Telling You?
I came across the quote, “Genes do not eliminate the need for hard work; they simply tell us what we should work hard at,” not too long ago in the book Atomic Habits by James Clear (legendary book, by the way). It speaks deeply to me. Genetically, I am pre-dispositioned for success in bodybuilding/weightlifting because I am naturally slim, have an x-like body shape, and can build muscle quickly. However, that does not eliminate the need for hard work. I still work out about 5–7 days a week, eat healthily 70–90% of the time, and focus on implementing healthy habits and nutrition to maximize my body type.
Good genetics don’t eliminate the need for work; they tell you what you should focus on. Everyone has a body built for something, which is why some people dominate sports. Look at Michael Phelps, who dominated swimming, or Michael Jordan, who dominated basketball in his era. These guys have body types that are perfect for their chosen sport.
Hard Work Always Beats Genetics
However, there are outliers. There are people like Tom Brady, who technically have little athletic ability, yet he is one of the greatest athletes of all time. How did he do it? Worth ethic. Whether you have the genes or not, you must invest time, effort, and energy to become great at your craft.
The people who are most successful in life are not where they are because of their genetics or perfect childhood; they are there because of diligent and consistent effort that brought them to where they are today.
Consistency, perseverance, hard work, determination, good habits, and willpower separate the best from the rest.
What is it that you desire most to achieve? Maybe it’s to start multiple businesses, become a multi-millionaire, start a private school, or own a professional sports team. Whatever it is, you can do it. If you don’t have the right tools, you can acquire them. If you don’t feel smart enough, you can acquire knowledge. If you don’t feel like you have enough money, you can get access or discover new ways to earn money. There are always ways to manifest your dreams and goals. Keep going. Don’t give in. Don’t give up.
It’s not always easy to consistently work out and eat healthily, but it’s doable. This applies to any worthwhile goal; it’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.
