It will help you continue making progress in life during storms
I called my friend and told them they had my love and that I would be there for them through the loss.
Less than a few weeks ago, another dear friend lost their mother.
The pain of both losses hit me hard.
But…
In less than an hour, I had a big meeting that required me to bring my A-game. Though I felt the emotion trying to seep through, I realized I must forge ahead for a quick 30-minute call despite the loss and press pause on allowing the emotions to be fully expressed.
I told myself some affirmations and put my head in the game. I knew that the meeting would be powerful, impactful, and smooth. I believed it in my heart, and this was an affirmation I told myself.
The meeting went exceptionally well.
After the meeting, I called a loved one, told them about the loss, and continued the conversation with my friend, and I allowed the emotion to sit in fully.
Here’s what I’ve learned about loss:
Loss is inevitable, painful, debilitating, and stressful.
It’s tough to handle, but if we allow loss to break us apart, we will never reach our potential and purpose.
Don’t ignore your emotions; feel them.
But there will be times when you must set aside your emotions for a greater purpose.
Some Losses Require Immediate Pause
There have been other times when I experienced loss, and everything had to come to a pause because the pain was too much to bear.
Thankfully, during these times, I was given grace and didn’t have any major obligations that required my immediate attention.
Giving ourselves time to breathe, pause, reflect, and sit in our pain is okay.
This is healthy behavior and helps commence the healing process.
Learn how to effectively distinguish between losses that require a pause versus losses that you can delay getting emotional about for a little longer.
It’s important that you know how to do both.
Some Losses You Have To Move Through
There will be times when you must force yourself to function in the presence of pain.
These times will test your limits, but they are also character-building times.
Healthy Coping Mechanisms Include:
Therapy.
Journaling.
Meditating.
Getting proper rest.
Confiding in trustworthy people.
Working out and staying physically active.
Eating a healthy diet to keep your mind and emotional state clear.
Life continues to move forward despite what circumstances it brings. As life moves, so must we.
Time finds a way to heal most (if not all) emotional wounds.
