Be uninterested in surrendering results for lazy habits
However, since I’ve been in the gym most of my life, I experience significant burnout, which is why I also take sabbaticals.
But for the most part….
When I don’t feel like going to the gym, I put my d*mn shoes on.
Why do I do it – even though I’ve been in the gym most of my life? Because I desire to live a healthy lifestyle and inspire others to do the same.
Discipline Over Motivation 100% Of The Time
Don’t seek motivation to get to the gym or outside/inside to get your workout in, and here’s why:
Motivation is a very fickle emotion.
Sometimes you’ll have it.
Many times you won’t.
But discipline, now that’s a whole different beast.
The more disciplined you are, and the more you practice the art of self-discipline, the more addicted you will become to the results.
After a while, you’ll find it difficult to skip doing the things that bring you results because that’s the thing…you’re finally getting results.
Once I started to build muscle, I became addicted to the results, which has made me more interested in continuing to get my workouts in.
I don’t want to surrender my results for laziness.
What Putting Your Shoes On Will Do For You
Now don’t put your shoes on and turn the tv on, or you might sit there and end up watching tv.
Follow the steps:
Put your shoes on.
Do one pushup.
Envision the image of your ideal physique.
Now go get that full workout in.
If you’re really struggling to work out, do what my mother does.
She made a home gym in her house.
Now she will never have an excuse not to work out.
Her workout room is also her office.
Whenever she is in that room at least five days a week, her fitness equipment stares at her straight in the face, along with all the motivational fitness posters and images on the walls.
It’s hard to make up an excuse not to work out now.
Make Progress Easy
James Clear recommends in Atomic Habits to make unproductive habits hard and invisible and make productive habits easy and visible.
A perfect example of this is my mother creating a home gym and getting rid of all the unhealthy foods in her home.
Leave your gym shoes at the door.
Leave your workout outfit in the most visible place.
Leave some weights or simple workout equipment around your house.
I’m grateful I have dogs. Because I desire them to be healthy, I walk them frequently, which also keeps me walking and active since I work on the computer a lot. It’s a nice tradeoff. And I keep the leashes visible at the door as a good reminder for me to get that walk in, and my dogs sure aren’t shy about reminding me or asking for an extra walk or two.
Today I Didn’t FEEL Like Going To the Gym
But I went anyways
